WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 4. Oktober 2011 report Geschrieben 4. Oktober 2011 Giorgio Barbier, Racing Director Pirelli Moto, sums up the twelfth and penultimate round of the 2011 Superbike World Championship held at the Magny-Cours circuit in France, from the point of view of the championship's official one-make tyre supplier. "I would like to first congratulate the 2011 Superbike World Champion Carlos Checa, who this year has demonstrated great performance and consistency, as well as Davide Giugliano who at Magny-Cours earned his first title in Superstock 1000, and also to the Althea Racing team who supported these two champions. My compliments also go to Chaz Davies, another first time World Champion in the Supersport class on his ParkinGo Yamaha. Throughout the weekend the French circuit enjoyed favorable weather conditions, in the past it had regularly been ruined by days of rain and cold. The track temperature fluctuated between 32° and 42°C from Race 1 to Race 2. For Magny-Cours, as always, Pirelli made available several solutions for riders to choose from, making up a total of 4658 tyres. The Supersport class saw 3 solutions for the front and 3 for the rear, while in SBK we prepared a total of 4 front solutions and 4 rear. In Supersport nearly all riders opted for the new Supersoft (SC0) rear matched with the new soft (SC1) front which uses Pirelli's PTSM process. Virtually all the Superbike riders preferred the new C solution (new SC1 development) that exploits the aforementioned PTSM compounding, and on the rear a similar C solution which should become the new SC2 production for 2012. It was truly a weekend full of emotions!" WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 4. Oktober 2011 report Geschrieben 4. Oktober 2011 Despite starting the two World Superbike race at Magny-Cours in France from pole position, the day ended in disappointment for Castrol Honda rider Jonathan Rea as the 24-year-old from Northern Ireland finished neither race. In race one, Rea appeared to jump the start but, as he stopped, the lights went out and he was left down in seventh place on the opening laps. At the end of lap four, as he prepared to fight his way back to the front, Rea touched the curb at the final chicane, crashing out of contention. He went out for race two on his spare CBR1000RR Fireblade and got the perfect start from his pole position, leading into the first turn and the subsequent seven laps. However, on lap 13, Rea's bike slowed visibly and he retired shortly afterwards, his team diagnosing a faulty crank ignition sensor as the cause of his retirement. "This is not exactly what we expected after a strong performance in Imola and we were hoping to make up for the disappointment of that second race retirement. We kind of got halfway there with the pole position yesterday, but raceday was a completely different chapter. In race one, you know, I can put my hand up and say I got completely out of rhythm after I thought I'd jumped the start. Actually, when we checked the wheel speeds, it turned out that it wasn't a jump start - it was just a short movement, but I got swamped in the pack. I was out of my rhythm then and ended up making a stupid mistake over a kerb. I was leading race two for a good bit and enjoying myself. Eugene went past and made a bit of a break but I re-grouped and then realised that Carlos was coming. I thought I'd follow Carlos back up to Eugene and he'd pull us clear, but we had another silly little electrical malfunction. Of course it's disappointing for both myself and the team to have two DNFs here but now we're going to Portimao, which is a track that I really enjoy and we've had some success there. We won't feel sorry for ourselves because we know we've got the pace to run at the front, no matter what the conditions, so we'll got to Portugal and I'll do my best as usual." View the full article

WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 5. Oktober 2011 report Geschrieben 5. Oktober 2011 WorldSBK.com provides a quick round-up of the stats, facts and figures from the twelfth and penultimate round of the FIM Superbike World Championship at the Magny-Cours circuit in France. CHECA SEASON RECORDS Carlos Checa once more dominated the race weekend, posting his fifth season double win and taking his wins tally to fourteen. These are Checa's records compared to the most amazing seasons of the past. Wins in a season: the record belongs to Doug Polen, 17 in 1991. Checa is not able to beat this record: at the moment he recorded the second highest value, fourteen, equalling the championships of Troy Bayliss (2002) and Ben Spies (2009). It's useful to remember that in thirteen cases a rider was able to post at least ten wins in a season, but only in three of them the rider was not on Ducati machinery: Max Biaggi last year (10, Aprilia), Colin Edwards in 2002 (11, Honda) and the aforementioned Ben Spies (Yamaha). Doubles in a season: the record was set by Doug Polen in 1991 and Troy Bayliss in 2006, six. Carlos can equal it in Portimao. Doubles in a season with both fastest laps: in Magny Cours Checa equalled the absolute season best of Doug Polen, 1991, recording his third double with fastest laps after Miller and Misano. Fastest laps in a season: Doug Polen set the absolute best at fourteen in 1991. Checa this year recorded eleven, third all-time value, one less than Noriyuki Haga in 2007. Podium placements: record of 25, by Colin Edwards in 2002. Carlos scored 20 podiums this year and in Portimao he can aim for the second all-time value, 22, recorded by Troy Bayliss in 2002. Front row starts: the record is thirteen, recorded four times, Checa is at eleven. Kilometers in the lead (*): in 2003 Neil Hodgson led for 1293 kms, Checa is now at 1003, with 202 kms to go in Portugal, Carlos is not in the position to beat this record. (*) data is available since 1998. NOTES ON CHECA CHAMPION • At 38 years he is the second oldest rider to take his maiden title after Max Biaggi, which was 39 last year and, like Biaggi, he obtains the title at his fourth Superbike season; • he is the first Spaniard to win the championship. Before him, the best result for Spain was recorded by Ruben Xaus, second behind Neil Hodgson in 2003; • it's the sixth time in history that the champion led the standings throughout the season. Before him: 1995 and 1999 Fogarty, 2000 Edwards, 2003 Hodgson, 2008 Bayliss; • for the thirteenth time in history the winner of the opening race wins the championship, it didn't happen since 2008 (Bayliss); • after a two year wait (Yamaha and Aprilia), Ducati won again the riders crown: in the history of the world championship, the Italian manufacturer never failed for more than two years on a riders' title. It happened also in the first two seasons 1988-1989 (Honda); • Carlos heads to the last two races with a 107 points advantage over Marco Melandri, second-placed in the standings. The maximum advantage recorded at the end of a season was in 1991: 150 points separated Doug Polen from Raymond Roche. NOTES ON THE RACES • Jonathan Rea scored in Magny Cours his second career pole after the 2010 Assen one: a wait of one year and five months, the seventh longest in history. At the top of the list Noriyuki Haga, which waited three years and ten months to score his second pole (Albacete 1998 - Sugo 2002). The Briton is in good company though: in this "waiting list" there are four world champions in front of him. Neil Hodgson (three years and three months), James Toseland (two years and eight months), Carlos Checa (nearly two years: Miller 2008-Miller 2010) and Doug Polen (a year and seven months); • after Magny Cours the season podiums in his rookie season for Marco Melandri are fourteen, the second all-time value for a rookie after the seventeen scored by Biaggi in 2007 and Spies in 2009; • due to a technical problem, Ayrton Badovini saw his streak of races in the points coming to an end after twenty races. At the moment the rider with the longest active sequence is Eugene Laverty, 21 races. During this season the Briton didn't score points only in Donington, race one, for a fall. View the full article

WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 5. Oktober 2011 report Geschrieben 5. Oktober 2011 Marco Melandri was in particularly fine form at Magny-Cours over the weekend, the Italian putting in some powerful performances to notch up two second places on a circuit he had never seen before. With one round left, Melandri, a WSBK rookie, has now almost completed an outstanding year in second place in the overall Championship classification. Despite struggling with the front set up on his machine in race one, the Italian managed to gradually work his way through the pack to cross the line second, just behind Carlos Checa as the Spaniard claimed the 2011 World Championship title. In race 2 Melandri climbed up to the third before closing in on and overtaking his team-mate on the last lap to power his Yamaha to the line, close behind champion Checa and claim the second step on the podium, while Laverty closely followed in third. "I'm pleased with my two podium finishes today," said Marco. "Race one was very difficult, I was with struggling with the front so we modified the fork a bit before the second race but it didn't make the difference I had hoped for. At the beginning I didn't have a good feeling with the bike but mid-way I was more comfortable and pushed as hard I could. When I saw Eugene on the small hairpin on the last lap, I knew it was my only chance to get ahead. My target today was to catch up on the riders ahead and I did my best in both races so I'm happy to come away with two seconds." View the full article

WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 6. Oktober 2011 report Geschrieben 6. Oktober 2011 After the dust had settled on his WSBK championship win at Magny-Cours Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) took some time out to answer journalists' questions and reflect on his amazing season. When asked about how he managed to win a championship after many years of racing he stated, "My career has been long and you never know if this championship can happen. I always tried to improve and enjoy tried to be involved in this world and make it like school - where I grow up in all ways. I rode a Superbike in Ten Kate at first, which I appreciated, and then with Genesio (Bevilacqua, his team owner) it was like an adventure, trying out a two-cylinder machine. I thought I could ride this bike and be comfortable and we had some magic moments, especially this year." As Checa explains, his championship may have come along in 2011, but it was also due to some great work put in during 2010, on a very similar machine. "These moments did not come alone. We made some improvements this year but we did a lot of improvements last year. I feel even stronger now than I did at the beginning of 2011. This is good, I will keep working for next year, but I want to enjoy this moment too." When asked why 2011 was the year he won a world championship, especially at much nearer 40 years of age rather than 30, he explained," You need the team and the bike and many things together to become a world champion. During my career I had some good moments but if I did not win before it was because I was not as good as now. Especially because I did not have the right team and the right bike. This moment arrived, at the right moment." Checa's smooth style and near-faultless consistency made his winning season look easy but Carlos confirmed it was far from it. "It is not only the way to be fast, it is how to understand sometimes why you are not fast," said Checa. "You must be honest with yourself and your team. You need also to absorb and digest, pressure. There are moments like at Magny-Cours, or Imola, and some other races. At the end of the day we are humans and we have capabilities and weak points. In the past we had some good moments, technically, but I feel that it probably mentally I made some mistakes. It is easy to make a mistake! I realised this and tried to improve. I have improved under braking and especially in turning right hand corners. We have made the right decisions with the bike and made the right moves on the track. Personally this is the greatest satisfaction I have." View the full article

WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 6. Oktober 2011 report Geschrieben 6. Oktober 2011 The Kawasaki supported European Junior Cup has provided fantastic racing all season as the young riders battle on their identical Ninja 250 R machinery. The final round at Magny-Cours proved to be no exception with a tremendous race to end the season. Heading into the Magny-Cours World Superbike round Australian Matt Davies lead Germanys Tom Busch by 10 points, and needed only to finish third to clinch the title. Busch was determined to give his all and was fast from the start, setting the quickest time in free practice before going on to claim pole position in qualifying from wildcard English rider Josh Harland in second. Matt Davies qualified third, after an uncharacteristic fall, and Californian Brandon Kyee completed the front row. The start of the race saw New Zealand 125 champ Jake Lewis lead for 3 laps whilst Davies, Busch and Harland swapped positions at nearly every turn. Busch fell back in the group and was passed for third by Spain's Ruben Fenoll, despite an incredibly brave passing manoeuvre by the German rider around the outside of the group at turn two. At the start of lap six the championship was all but decided when Busch - who was desperate to take the lead and keep his title hopes alive, tried the same line only to run wide and fall, sliding into the gravel trap. Seeing his rival was out of the race Davies sensibly stayed out of the battle for the podium between Harland, Fenoll, Lewis and his fellow New Zealander Daniel Mettam. Fenoll and Mettam were fighting for third place in the championship and despite the young Spaniard gesturing to chase the leaders the two riders slowed each other and Harland was able to establish a gap which Jake Lewis pushed hard to close. Further down the field Finnish rider Valter Patronen had improved dramatically on his qualifying times and was closing on the lead group in sixth, followed closely by the youngest rider in the race Augusto Fernandez who also set the fastest race lap. In the final corners Mettam made a small mistake allowing Fenoll past to take third place at the line, behind Jake Lewis in second and a jubilant Josh Harland taking the win. Matt Davies showed maturity to ride safely to a close fourth position. And so after 6 fantastic races Australian Matt Davies is the 2011 European Junior Cup Champion, ahead of a courageous Tom Busch from Germany, who braved a fractured elbow to join the post race celebrations and congratulate his rival, and Spain's consistently fast Ruben Fenoll. Results: 1. Josh Harland (Gran Bretagna); 2. Jake Lewis (Nuova Zelanda); 3. Ruben Fenoll (Spagna); 4. Matt Davies (Australia); 5. Valter Patronen (Finlandia); 6. Daniel Mettam (Nuova Zelanda); 7. WORLDSBK.COM Geschrieben 7. Oktober 2011 report Geschrieben 7. Oktober 2011 There have been some ups and downs in his career but for Chaz Davies the highest high has not been difficult to spot. For the Welsh racing Wizard it finally came into sharp focus last weekend, at Magny-Cours in France, when he became the Supersport World Champion on his Yamaha ParkinGO R6. Chaz, who was in reflective mood after the impact of his championship win had been absorbed, it seems, said "This feels like not a long time coming, but a lot of hard work. I've had a lot of bad days and good days in this sport. It only takes one person and one team, and a little bit of faith to turn it around and that person is Giuliano Rovelli (boss of his ParkinGO team) presenting an opportunity to me two years ago in Imola to come and ride for him, to try me out basically. I just felt like it was another segment in my career. So yeah, I got that opportunity, did my best with it and I was able to pay back with some good results last year and this year with the late change to Yamaha, everything was a little bit unknown coming into the season. The first couple of races were a little bit difficult, we went the wrong direction with the setup, and then we had a really good package in the middle of the year. As soon as things started to click into gear we kept pushing and pushing to try to reduce the gap in the points because I think Luca (Scassa) was ahead at that point. We've been very, very, consistent in the middle part of the season, pushed hard the whole time and everything worked out very well for us until last week." He continued, "We did a lot of hard riding in the middle of the season to get a big advantage, as big advantage as possible in the points. But even in Silverstone I was ready to start being careful if I had to finish third. If I had to take a result off the podium or crash, I'd take the result off the podium. But eventually it turned out that I won in Silverstone, I won in Nürburgring. In Germany I felt like I had one hand on the championship but I know, probably better than the most, it can change like that (finger snap). So at Imola things went perfect until five laps to go. It was a big, big disappointment last week but luckily we did have the points gap and I was able to do just enough today, really. I can't say it was a fantastic day in Magny-Cours for me but the objective was to do just enough after last week and that's what we did." When asked about how it felt to win when there were a lot of other potential champions about, on Honda and Kawasaki machines, Chaz stated, "It's been a tough going. Everybody had their own moments, and the key was trying to stay consistent and obviously push hard every race but the main thing was consistency because guys that popped up one weekend weren't there the weekend before. So they turned around quite a lot and make it fairly exciting. So the key was consistency and obviously every weekend I was delivered with a good bike. The team didn't have to do anything drastic, just stay focused and not get too crazy to get outside the range of the setup and just try to do what we do. Obviously I tried not to make mistakes during the races." View the full article
