001_p09_pirelli_superpole.jpgPirelli announces that starting from 2013, it will begin supplying all the tyres for the World Superbike Championship, which currently are produced in 16.5", in the 17" size. This radical option will allow Pirelli to remain even closer to its philosophy, its unique approach towards competition with its continuous transferring of solutions developed in the racing environment into the hands of motorcyclists and into road going product through technologies and developments coming from the highest level production series World Championship for which Pirelli is the sole supplier.

Pirelli's 16.5" Diablo Superbike tyres are currently used not only in the Superbike World Championship, but also in World Endurance, BSB and CIV which have been the reference to date. Until 2004 in fact, the unique supplier agreement did not exist in the Superbike World Championship so Pirelli adapted itself to the sizes offered by other suppliers.

In line with the primary goal of WSBK to showcase in the highest level of racing the products also sold on the market, Pirelli will replace the current 16.5" tyres with 17" sized tyres which have already been successful in the local Superbike championships in New Zealand, Holland, Belgium, Greece, Sweden, Canada, Malaysia and many other local championships.

The 17" slick tyre is the optimal response for those seeking top performance without having to modify the chassis: ultra-high performance without mounting a new set of wheels or changing the bike's settings. Over the past three years, Pirelli has greatly accelerated its tyre development to meet end users' needs and the power delivered by new bikes: in 2009, Pirelli introduced the new 190/60R17 size, in 2010 introduced a new high modulus carcass (Pirelli Patent), continuously improving compounds and finally in 2011 introduced the new 200/60R17 size.

Compared to the 16,5" slick tyre, the 17" one offers a thicker tread for better handling and consistency, its footprint in mid to full lean is approx 10% wider thanks to a higher profile and a carcass able to endure more side force, all those features will definitely bring great benefits to motorcyclists all over the world. The Superbike World Championship will be an excellent environment that will allow Pirelli, as sole supplier, to develop the best tyres for 17", a size that is now more and more demanded by the market, thus remaining faithful to its motto "We sell what we race" and thus continuing to offer riders the highest quality products developed with the help of the great Superbike champions.

014_t01_laverty_box.jpgEugene Laverty's new role in 2012 will be as an official Aprilia rider, and at the recent Portimao post-race tests he got his first chance to ride the RSV4R racebike. In the single day test, which ended early at 15.00 hours on Tuesday, Laverty actually proved to be fastest of all, with a lap time of 1'42.8 seconds after some early adjustment to the small and densely packed Aprilia.

"That felt pretty good," said Laverty, who continued, "and I did a 1'42.8, and a few other fast laps too. When I first rode it, it felt small and I noticed how much I could move around the bike. We had to make some changes, from the base setting that Aprilia has. We had some chatter and some harshness and we really worked through a lot really and by the end we had all but fixed all the problems we had. Everything I had heard about the Aprilia was a little bit scared of the rigidity, the lack of engine brake but it was no problems at the end of me. For me the engine brake was fine and I thought there would be less. I was looking forward to riding this bike and it has really impressed me."

416_r12_davies_press_conf.jpgAn entirely convincing champion in the Supersport World Championship this year, Chaz Davies (Yamaha ParkinGO) is set for a jump up to the Superbike World Championship in 2012, alongside his ParkinGO squad, as usual headed by team owner Giuliano Rovelli.

Rovelli confirmed recently that Davies would stick with the team and that they would now compete on Ducatis, in a one-man squad in what will be a rookie WSBK year for almost all involved in the project.

"The plan is to move into Superbike with Chaz," said Rovelli, "and we will have new 1198 machines. We have ordered them directly from Ducati, so they will be brand new. The team that I have already confirmed is Lucio Nicastro, my right hand/team manager and the technical director of the team will be Alberto ‘Moro' Colombo (the latter being an integral part of many previous World championship winning WSBK Ducati efforts: Ed). We will have an engineer and an electronics engineer from Ducati Corse. We will use Öhlins suspension and we are now planning our winter test schedule."

Said Davies, "I rode a Ducati 800 before but it is going to be a million miles away from what this is. Only the brand will be the same. I rode a twin once before for a season in AMA, just not a Ducati. To start in Superbike with all the personnel, like Moro and Lucio and two guys from Ducati - you cannot really ask for a better start."

r12_juniors_035.jpegThis year has seen the young riders from the inaugural Kawasaki supported European Junior Cup provide spectacular entertainment for World Superbike fans, with race long battles and a fight to the last for the championship honours between Germany's Tom Busch and eventual champion, Australian Matt Davies.

The 2012 European Junior Cup was officially launched at the Portimao World Superbike round in a press conference held by SBK General Manager Paolo Ciabatti together with Kawasaki European race planning manager Steve Guttridge and the EJC series director Gerry Bryce. The series has been deemed a great success, with all the young EJC riders having advanced their skills dramatically through the season and with several riders from this season now graduating into the Superstock 600 class for 2012.

For next season the championship will see an increase in the number of race rounds, from six to eight, and an extra 15 minutes of free practice time. With the support of all parties involved the entry fee has been maintained at the same level of 2011, thus providing an affordable entry level into international racing for young riders from all around the globe.

EJC Calendar 2012: 1. Assen (22 April); 2. Monza (06 May); 3. Misano (10 June); 4. Aragon (01 July); 5. Brno (22 July); 6. Silverstone (05 August); 7. Nurburgring (09 September); 8. Magny-Cours (07 October)

035_t01_haslam_action.jpgAs well as testing new Pirelli tyres at the recent Portimao test BMW Motorrad Motorsport rider Leon Haslam had the chance to try out many key parts of the 2012 machine, alongside his new team-mate Marco Melandri.

Haslam had one 2011 bike and one bike with a 2012 chassis and bodywork and several other new parts, in advance of the machine's official launch at Valencia a few days later. He said of his first taste of his 2012 equipment, "A new bike so we were trying things and it was a short day finishing at three o'clock. The main difference was obviously set-up, with different chassis mods and the engine felt pretty good straight away. I was really playing around with balance. We ran out of time a bit but it went well because we were quicker than we were in the race, and that was always a positive."

All the advances to the new S1000RR racebike, both internal and external, have been devised to make the machine more rideable, and to centralise mass. Chassis changes include a modified swingarm pivot point.

This test was also used by Pirelli as part of their process of determining which tyres to take to the first round in Australia next year - as most options will be shipped there, rather than flown out like the machines and specialist tools.

522_r13_corser_last_race.jpgNobody has ever started as many races as Troy Corser in the Superbike World Championship, and not that many can equal or better his record of two championships and 33 race wins.

Now, at the age of 39, the legendary Corser has decided to hang up his BMW Motorrad Motorsport race leathers and take on another role within the BMW family, after three years of competitive riding for the German manufacturer in WSBK.

Corser has, in fact, ridden for six manufacturers during his long career, from his early wild card outings on a Yamaha in 1992 to a championship year for Ducati in 1996 and then for Suzuki in 2005.

Said Troy of ending one era and beginning another, "I have been racing for a long time and the day had to come, and although it is a sad day for a lot of people it had to come at some stage. I think it is time to do it right now... For me it is an honour to stay involved with BMW as an ambassador, and there are lots of different areas where I will still be involved with the development, PR and so on. So I am not disappearing, I will still be around at the tracks."

Of his early memories of WSBK racing he said, "I rode in 1992 as a wild card on a Yamaha at Phillip Island, and I never thought I would be racing for pretty much 20 years in World Superbike and win a couple of world championships along the way. It has been good and I have worked with almost every manufacturer, in the paddock, bar Kawasaki. So I pretty much know everybody here. I have learned a lot and made a lot of good friends and I am still going to stay friends with all of them."
