01_fim.jpgSome more details of changes to the championship regulations were delivered by the FIM today in a press release. A précis of the main points follows:

* For Immediate Application - Practice by riders and teams contracted to compete in the FIM Superbike World Championship is prohibited from the 1st of December until the 15th of January.

* From January 1st 2012, the date of birth of all prospective Superstock riders must fall between 1st January 1986 and 29th March 1996.

* In Superbike, Supersport and Superstock classes, as of 2012 there will be only one motorcycle per rider on race weekends. In Supersport each rider will have only eight engines at his disposal for the entire season, while in the Superstock class there will be a limit of three engines per rider for an entire season.

* The balancing rules between various motorcycle concepts will be changed, with further details to be passed on at a later date. New minimum weights have been brought in for 1200cc twins in the Superbike class - 171kg - up six kilos on the starting base of 2011. Fours remain at 165kg, but there will be no tolerance on the minimum weight for any type of machine.

* All pre-Superpole practice and qualifying session in the Superbike class will now be of 45 minutes duration, and Superpole itself will run to a new timetable.

* In the case of a Dry Superbike Superpole, the first 16 riders will qualify for Superpole 1, the first 12 riders in Superpole 1 will go into Superpole 2, and the top eight riders from that session will go forward to Superpole 3. In the case of a Wet Superpole having been declared, The first 16 riders will take part in wet Superpole 1, which will last for 20-minutes. The fastest eight riders will go into Superpole 2, which will also last for 20 minutes.

* There will be no flag-to-flag races in Superbike, and if the Race Director considers that a dry race has become wet he can interrupt the race to allow riders to change to wet tyres. Wet races will not be interrupted for climatic reasons. If a race has been stopped for climatic reasons, then the restart will automatically be a wet race.

* All riders competing in the race at the time the red flag was shown will be able to restart if they are ready for a restarted race.

* New penalties for riders can now include a drop of position, plus a drop of any number of grid positions at the rider's next race, as well as other existing penalties.

Final rules will be published soon.

044_p13_mccormick_action.jpgRecently crowned 2011 Canadian Superbike Champion Brett McCormick rounded off his remarkable year with some impressive riding at world level. Offered a late season berth with the Garnier Alpha Racing Team in the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup Brett managed to turn in a pair of solid performances on the BMW S1000RR in the last two races of the season.

At Magny-Cours Brett worked his way from a starting position of 19th to a credible 13th at the flag. A fortnight later at Portimao, he overcame a recalcitrant gearbox to make the run from 15th on the grid to a solid 10th place finish.

It was in post-race Superbike testing at Portimao where eyebrows were raised. On Monday's media day, Brett, doing the legwork for a Canadian bike magazine, was able to sample several of this year's class-leading superbikes. The next day Pirelli's Giorgio Barbier arranged a Tuesday afternoon test session with Team Effenbert-Liberty Racing.

On the Ducati 1098R campaigned by Jakub Smrz, and with only 30 laps available, Brett got down to work and was soon circulating consistently in the 1.44s with a best time of 1.44.2, putting him ninth fastest among the series regulars also testing on the day. Compared to riders' fastest laps in Sunday's action Brett's time of 1.44.2 would have put him right in between the 9th and 10th place finisher in both superbike races.

Currently evaluating his options for 2012 Brett has now returned to Saskatchewan in Canada to play ice hockey, his second favourite sport.

062_r13_start_action.jpgOf all the championship battles in the WSBK sphere the most keenly fought in 2011 was to be found in the Superstock 600 European Championship.

Even from the first few races of a season that started in the Netherlands on April 16, it was obvious this was going to be close and combative all the way. After we had registered six different winners in the first six races of the year, it was clear that things would go all the way to the final round.

First off Michael van Der Mark (Ten Kate Junior Team Honda) stuck in a home win at Assen, then Romain Lanusse (Yamaha MRS Yamaha Racing France) took top honours at Monza, before wild card Giuliano Gregorini (RCGM Team Yamaha) upset the regulars at Misano.

After winning a race at Magny-Cours last season, Jed Metcher (MTM-RT Yamaha) recorded his only full-pointer of the 2011 season at the new circuit of Motorland Aragon. Dino Lombardi (Yamaha Martini Corse) was victorious at Brno but it was the ever-improving Joshua Day (Revolution Racedays Kawasaki) who would leave Silverstone as not only a race winner, but one of the riders who would challenge for the title all the way.

Van Der Mark was another, who despite two no-scores would work his way almost to the championship itself with three wins in the last four races (in Germany, France and at the season finale in Portugal).

The trio of potential champions, all on different machinery, was completed by Jed Metcher, but he had to wait until the very last lap, of the very last race, to take the championship, by 12 points from Day and 13 from van der Mark. Day had won again at round eight in Imola, but he had to give best to Metcher overall after the last race of the year.

Nine riders in total, from seven countries (Netherlands, USA, Australia, Italy, Belgium, France and Slovakia) appeared on the podium at some stage or other through what was a crowd-pleasing season.

Yamaha, Kawasaki and Honda riders filled the top three places, and in terms of race wins, Yamaha scored four, van der Mark's one man Honda campaign also delivered four wins and Josh Day's similar solo Kawasaki effort recorded two victories.

Open racing, with a variety of competitive machines, and three stand out talents fighting over the title on the last day - it's been a great year for the smaller Superstock class.

100_p13_biaggi_box.jpgMax Biaggi's 2011 defence of the title he had won the previous year did not go the way the Italian had expected. The factory Aprilia rider, who had to hand over his Superbike crown to Carlos Checa, was however again one of the stars of the season, picking up two wins, nine seconds and a third.

The main difference from the previous season was the number of wins (2 against 10), with the first of the two coming very late on in round 7 at Motorland Aragón, race 2. This lengthy wait went side-by-side with the domination of his Spanish rival, who scored eight wins in the first six rounds of the season, three of them doubles.

Biaggi went close to the win in race 2 at Monza but because he cut the chicane at the Prima Variante at the start of lap 11 and did not follow the right procedure for returning to the track, he was penalized with a ride-through while in the lead. Biaggi eventually finished in eighth place.

The biggest blow for the Italian however undoubtedly came at the Nürburgring at the start of September, when the Roman Emperor fractured the metatarsus bone in his left foot during Saturday qualifying. The injury meant that Biaggi had to miss both the races in Germany and he was unable to take part in the next rounds at Imola and Magny-Cours, which put paid to any chances of him winning the world title again.

His return to the track at Portimão for the final round of the season was never going to be easy, but despite this Biaggi scored a fourth and a seventh place in the two races, after starting from a lowly 17th on the grid. These results helped Biaggi to take third place overall in the standings ahead of Eugene Laverty (who will be his team-mate next season), which he achieved on second-place count-back as both riders finished the season with the same number of points and victories.

0716_r03_camier_ambience.jpgCrescent Suzuki is pleased to announce its agreement with 25-year-old British racer Leon Camier for their assault on the World Superbike Championship in 2012. Following the announcement that it would be competing on the world stage next season, Crescent Suzuki has now secured the talents of one of the top young stars in World Superbike.

Hailing from Ashford in Kent and currently residing in Andorra, Camier already has a wealth of experience in high-level racing and includes three British Championships - 125cc in 2001, Supersport in 2005 and Superbike in 2009 - amongst his achievements. He will begin testing the Crescent Suzuki GSX-R1000 later this month and is confident for the challenge ahead.

Crescent Suzuki will announce Camier's team-mate in the very near future, as well as confirming its commercial partners for the forthcoming season in due course. The first round of the 2012 WSB season is scheduled for Sunday 26th February at Phillip Island in Australia.

"I am absolutely thrilled and excited to be joining the Crescent team and with the opportunity to ride the GSX-R1000!" declared Camier. "My first two years in WSB have been tough but I've learnt a lot and had some good results to build on, so this is a great opportunity for me. I have met with Jack and Paul and it's clear that the team's attitude suits me perfectly. I feel we all have the same goals and I can't wait to start testing. I'm really looking forward to the new season and I believe that the Suzuki GSX-R is certainly a very capable bike, especially with the technical plan the guys have in place. This is a fantastic chance for me to take the next step in my career and I'm very thankful to the guys at Crescent for giving me the opportunity."

Team Manager Jack Valentine added: "We are really pleased to get the first signing under our belt! Leon is a rider I've always admired and he did a super job when he was in BSB. We're all looking forward to welcoming him to the team and I'm sure he will fit in well. We work as one team in the garage and this creates a good, strong atmosphere and I am sure that is something that he will benefit from. The Suzuki GSX-R is more than capable of achieving podium results in World Superbike and Leon has already showed that he is capable of producing them as well, so we should be a good partnership. I am sure that the addition of an aggressive, focused rider like Leon to our team, plus the developments planned for the 2012 GSX-R1000, will put us in a good position for the start of Crescent Suzuki's first year of World Superbike competition."
