petruccidom.jpgA talented Italian youngster is rapidly emerging on the International scene and his aim is to be in World Superbike next year. On Sunday 20 year-old Danilo Petrucci won the Italian CIV Superstock 1000 title, with one round left to race. Born in Umbria, Petrucci is the top rider for Team Italia, the programme set up again this year by the Italian Motorcycling Federation. Another curiosity about Petrucci is that he forms part of the Italian State Police's sports squad.

Petrucci began racing in 2007 and this season he also has a role as tester for Ducati's factory racing department. "Winning the Italian title early was great but I was on the best bike so I only did what was required. For years I've had to get by with bikes of an inferior standard, this time I was the one with an ace up my sleeve. The Ducati 1198R is a marvel, and the Barni team did the rest."

The superiority of Petrux was such that he managed to win the title early despite having a few problems. "Two DNFs in seven rounds, but they weren't my fault: at Misano the bike broke and I crashed and at Mugello we made a wrong choice of tyres. When everything went well, I could do fantastic lap times."

In Friday's free practice session at Vallelunga, Petrucci was quickest overall, even quicker than the Superbikes, and the World Championship regulars may actually find themselves having to deal with another tricky customer pretty soon...

"I'd like to make my world championship debut this season. I reckon I can't win the FIM Cup anymore, I've had too much bad luck and so if the situation doesn't change much at Imola and Magny-Cours there's no point in carrying on. I'd like to make the jump into the top class at Portimao. I think I can do well because I lapped very quick at Mugello with the new bike."

Petrucci is actually reported to have gone one second quicker than a certain Troy Bayliss at Mugello....

598_r06_melandri_action.jpgMarco Melandri set the quickest time for Yamaha on day 1 of Misano testing. The Italian lapped the World Circuit in a time of 1 minute 36.0 seconds, half a second quicker than June's race record lap set by Carlos Checa (1'36.520). The Althea Ducati man however still holds the best unofficial time around Misano, with a 1'34.9 set in May's testing. This time round Checa was three-tenths slower than Melandri and shares the slot with Eugene Laverty on the other Yamaha.

One-make tyre supplier Pirelli brought along the latest 2012-spec material, in particular for the Phillip Island opener, to the test as well as the tyres that will be used in the final three rounds of this year's championship.

With testing taking place in perfect conditions (air 31° / track 44°C), much interest surrounded the debut of Toni Elias (LCR Honda's MotoGP rider) on the BMW Italia machine vacated by James Toseland, who retired this week. The Spaniard, for the first time ever on a Superbike, did have one harmless crash and finished the day with a best lap of 1'38.1.

Excellent form was also shown by Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) with a time of 1'36.5, the British rider galvanized by his recent win in the wet at the Nurburgring. Joan Lascorz and the recovering Chris Vermeulen were also testing for the Akashi manufacturer, the Australian set to return to race action at Imola after a difficult season.

With Max Biaggi still convalescent after fracturing a bone in his left foot in Germany, Aprilia's testing duties were carried out by its test-team and German rider Alex Hofmann (1'37.0). The reigning world champion will attempt to return at Imola.

Unofficial Tuesday times: 1. Melandri (Yamaha) 1'36.0; 2. Checa (Ducati) 1'36.3; 3. Laverty (Yamaha) 1'36.3; 4. Sykes (Kawasaki) 1'36.5; 5. Badovini (BMW) 1'36.8; 6. Rea (Honda) 1'36.9; 7. Lascorz (Kawasaki) 1'36.9; 8. Hofmann (Aprilia) 1'37.0; 9. Martin (BMW) 1'37.9; 10. Xaus (Honda) 1'38.0; 11. Elias (BMW) 1'38.1; 12. Vermeulen (Kawasaki) 1'38.4; 13. Tamada (Honda) 1'39.8.

Supersport: 1. Salom (Kawasaki) 1'39.4; 2. Parkes (Kawasaki) 1'39.7; 3. Morais (Kawasaki) 1'40.6

533_r10_guintoli_grid.jpgSylvain Guintoli has been an unlucky rider at times, with injuries and other misfortunes playing a part in his 2011. In the past few races of this season he has found the form and fortune to hit some heights, however. On the front row at the opening round in Phillip Island on his Effenbert - Liberty Racing Ducati, he was unlucky to hurt his hand and his lower leg in a warm-up crash. As his team-mate Jakub Smrz romped to a near-win at Donington in the very next round, Guintoli was frustrated to not be at 100%. It took until round five in America for Sylvain to have his greatly desired first podium, with third in race one.

Improving results at Silverstone - two top six finishes - put Guintoli into the position of potential podium man one again if it all went right for him and his privateer Ducati. In the wet race two at the Nürburgring the Frenchman splashed his way to second, his best ever single result in this category of racing. It was a major contribution to his current overall ranking of eighth in the championship, only two points behind the rider in front.

For Guintoli, speaking after the German round, the latest podium was a reward for rider and team. "We finally got a result that was a reward for all our efforts," stated Sylvain. "We have had a lot of bad luck so far in 2011. The German race gave us good feedback in all practice and qualifying sessions. During the race I found that I had absolute confidence in the tyres and the podium result gives great satisfaction to all of us."

212_p04_melandri_box.jpgMarco Melandri (Yamaha World Superbike) stayed clear of the field once again in the second and final day of testing at Misano. The Italian lapped in 1 minute 35.8 seconds, seven-tenths of a second quicker than the official race record held by Checa in 1'36.52. Melandri's mark was also quicker than Checa's testing time of 1'36.0 set back in May on soft tyres.

Yamaha successfully tested the electronic updates requested by Melandri after the Misano round, which had not seen particularly positive results for the Italian-based team. Carlos Checa (Althea Racing) was second quickest, a couple of tenths behind, the Ducati man focussing on tyre testing for the upcoming rounds and for the opening round of the 2012 season.

Ayrton Badovini was an excellent fourth for BMW Italia with a time of 1'36.1, the young Italian doing most of the development work due to the absence of BMW Motorrad, while Steve Martin was the only rider present for the test-team. Badovini also had a harmless crash in the morning's run.

Toni Elias's test with the BMW left vacant by James Toseland concluded early on, the Spaniard improving to 1'37.8 before heading off to Aragon for the MotoGP race.

In Kawasaki, Joan Lascorz (1'36.1) was slightly quicker than team leader and Nurburgring winner Tom Sykes, while Chris Vermeulen was still suffering from the injury to his right knee and did not go out today. Kawasaki were the only team to use Superpole qualifying tyres at Misano, and with these Sykes set a 1'35.8 and Lascorz a 1'36.0.

With Max Biaggi recovering from the bone fracture in his left foot, Aprilia only brought along Alex Hofmann for the test. The Italian however should be ready to race at next week's Imola round.

Overall times (unofficial): 1. Melandri (Yamaha) 1'35.8; 2. Checa (Ducati), Laverty (Yamaha) 1'36.0; 4. Badovini (BMW), Lascorz (Kawasaki) 1'36.1 ; 6. Sykes (Kawasaki) 1'36.2; 7. Rea (Honda) 1'36.7; 8. Hofmann (Aprilia) 1'36.9; 9. Martin (BMW) 1'37.1; 10. Xaus (Honda) 1'37.4; 11. Elias (BMW) 1'37.8; 12. Vermeulen (Kawasaki) 1'38.4; 13. Tamada (Honda) 1'38.8.

Supersport: 1. Parkes (Kawasaki) 1'38.9; 2. Salom (Kawasaki) 1'39.4; 3. Morais (Kawasaki) 1'40.0

0585_r03_berger_tacconi.jpgAfter two years of participation in the World Superbike Championship, the Supersonic Team will retire from racing at the end of the season.

Team owner Danilo Soncini declared: "I'm really sorry to announce our withdrawal. To compete in SBK was my desire, my famous "dream" and passion. A motorcyclist since I was a child, I was pushing until the day to reach this highest level. I can say that I reached one of the goals of my life.

"I gave a chance to two young guys with a similar dream, Luca and Maxime. They have been with us, stir up the crowds, attracting fans. Some important doors went open for them, also thanks to our efforts and I am very proud of this. I really had a chance to enjoy the true essence of sport, before business and all the other things.

"The motivation of our withdrawal is not to be found in this time of crisis, since we are facing a large investment in the world from 2010 with a deep crisis, then continuing another difficult year in 2011. We would probably have continued in 2012 when we saw the more economic regulations, but new personal challenges are waiting for me. I will not have time anymore for the joy of following my team, and sure, I made this decision with deep regret. I didn't see our team as "job" or "work" but as a moment of a true passion, so it doesn't make sense to stay only for business or for money.

"So, it is time now to close this chapter, leaving a pleasant memory behind. To try to stay in this wonderful sport, I will start again to sponsor some riders or teams, likes some years ago in MotoGP. I would like to thank first of all, my team, my riders, and all the fans, the sponsors, Infront and my family who has sacrificed all the needed time in supporting my passion. Ciao and thanks again to everyone."

Waters and Yoshimura have graced the WSBK stage this year already on two occasions, in Waters' native Australia at Phillip Island and at Miller Motorsports Park in America.

The Yoshimura team always adds extra spice to any proceedings and they will be more than welcome to join the end of season action at one of the most interesting and challenging circuits on the calendar.

273_p10_rea_box.jpgAfter re-signing for the official Honda team for the 2012 WSBK championship recently Jonathan Rea took steps into the immediate and longer-term future in a two-day test at Misano. He not only got in some more valuable track time, he also had real material advances to evaluate, including a new ride-by-wire throttle system.

"It's been a real proper test, this, and we had a lot of stuff to work through. On top of that, Pirelli also brought some new rubber to try so, in the end, we actually ran out of time. We probably needed the rest of this week to get through everything, but we can definitely see the potential of the fly-by-wire system that I tested for the first time today. Also, I'm able to ride a lot more in my comfort zone with this new package and it helped with engine braking, too."

Recently back from an injury which he picked up in a frighteningly high speed crash at Misano in June, Rea had no worries about returning to the site of his big fall. "Going back to Misano was no problem for me and, in fact, I was going through the corner where I crashed faster than I did during the race weekend in June," said the tough rider from Northern Ireland.
