... > weiter

294_p06_checa_box.jpgWith a settled machine set-up and a methodical approach that has delivered 11 race victories so far in 2011, Carlos Checa and his Althea Racing Ducati team spent most of the 120-odd laps he put in at the recent Misano tests trying out new tyres for Pirelli, both in view of the remaining rounds and next year's season opener at Phillip Island.

As always set-up tweaks were included along the way, but Checa got through five new rear tyre solutions as he put in competitive lap times and worked his way to Imola, where he is a favourite to take more race wins.

Said Carlos, "Pirelli brought some new, high performance solutions for us to try and we were able to lap consistently fast. It was hot, with conditions similar to those of the June races, with a track temperature of around 44 degrees. Even though the asphalt was hot, the tyres behaved well and we were able to maintain fast times for numerous laps. We spent maybe 80% of our time working with the tyres and the rest trying some different things with regard to set up, all very positive."

Checa used his time in the best possible way and even finished early. "We're very happy with the results of these tests," concluded Checa. "We even closed a little early because we worked so well yesterday and today that we finished all we had planned ahead of time!"

136_r06_giugliano_podium.jpgOne man who has made a real impact this year is Davide Giugliano, the 22 year-old Italian currently leading the field in the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup. With three rounds left, the title battle is not yet over however, as this year's four-times race winner only has a 23 point lead over his closest rival. Giugliano's form has made him an ideal candidate for a possible promotion to World Superbike in 2012, but the Ducati Althea man is remaining fully focussed on his main aim - winning this year's title - strong in the knowledge that the team will make the best decision about his future.

You've got quite a good lead after a positive run of results. How do you feel about the final three rounds in the championship?

"I'm first in the table, but my lead is not that solid. It's clearly an advantage but you have to stay focussed right until the very end. But I have a calm approach for the last three races and above all I'm really motivated."

How does it feel to be part of a top-level team like Althea Ducati?

"At first it was strange, the Althea team is a true reference point and I had to work hard to keep up with them. Now it's getting interesting because I've never been left on my own until now, the team has helped me improve a lot, the guys have made all the difference with me. This is one of the reasons why Althea has become a top team in such a short time."

You've tested the new Ducati Extreme 1200 bike. What were your first impressions?

"I tested the new bike and it's great, I did three days of testing with Ducati Corse at Mugello. It's a new project and it's all going in the right direction. I was very happy to have been able to give my support to all the guys at Ducati."

What can you tell us about your future? Are you close to a ride in World Superbike?

"I'm an Althea ‘man', the team will make the right decision for me. I can't deny that moving up into Superbike is my aim and aiming to do that as soon as possible. But now I only want to think about the title, three races are an eternity and you have to keep your concentration at maximum. I'm sure that if I do my job, then Superbike won't be that far away..."

203_p10_biaggi_box.jpgIn a message on his personal website Max Biaggi has revealed that his recovery from his Nurburgring incident is a tougher struggle than expected and despite constant sessions of treatment and therapy, the 2010 world champion said that he cannot guarantee that he will definitely be able to line up at the circuit where he clinched last year's crown.

"Here I am 10 days after my accident writing about my physical condition" he declared. "The pain of the fracture is a bit better than yesterday. In fact the bone was broken and I knew it would be more difficult than expected. I am working all day, I am doing magnetic therapy sessions and am trying to do small movements. But the thing is more complicated than expected. Time is short and the difficulty will be huge but I will try with all my strength. I am so much looking forward to going racing again!"

After his problems at the Nurburgring, where he fractured a bone in his left foot on Friday after being hit by some debris, Biaggi now has little chance of retaining his title but he confirmed that he would do everything in his powers to race at Imola.

"I cannot assure you anything except the fact that I will fight to be there. I am constantly in touch with Dr. Costa and my physiotherapist. I will keep you updated this week."
