FIXI Crescent Suzuki is pleased to announce that Frenchman Jules Cluzel will be joining its Superbike World Championship team to race a Suzuki GSX-R1000 in 2013. Cluzel has signed for the team fresh from success in the World Supersport championship, where he took a total of eight podiums, including four victories, on his way to runner-up in the title race. Cluzel showed consistency throughout the 2012 season and ended the year by taking victory in his home race at Magny-Cours in France.

24-year-old Cluzel, from Montlucon in France, will get his first taste of the Yoshimura-powered Suzuki GSX-R at a test in Spain in January, with the first race of the season scheduled for Sunday 24th February at Phillip Island in Australia.

Jules Cluzel declared: "I am really excited to be joining the FIXI Crescent Suzuki team. It is a big step in my career, but one that I am very happy to take. When I was given the option to work with Suzuki in World Superbikes, I did not need to think about it twice and I just said a big "Yes!" straight away. I am really motivated by the whole project and I know that this is what I want. I will make sure I'm totally ready for the first race and plan to learn not only quickly, but also intelligently. I cannot wait to start work and I am also really pleased to be working with an English team. I now just want to get on the bike and see how it goes, do my best and challenge for some good results."

Paul Denning - Team Principal: "Securing Leon's team-mate for 2013 hasn't exactly been the smoothest process, but in the end we couldn't be happier with the result! Jules is young, fast and aggressive and has shown that he can adapt to new bikes and new championships very quickly. His 250GP and Moto2 experience provides an understanding and feeling for stiffer, less forgiving ‘race-bikes' which the WSBK machines have developed into, and we anticipate a quick transition to the GSX-R."

Ducati is finalising its plans for the 2013 World Superbike Championship, both in the development of the 1199 Panigale and how it will participate in the series.

The company has already confirmed the renewal of its contract with Carlos Checa, who won the 2011 World Superbike Championship on a Ducati 1198, and the Spanish rider will now continue development of the new Ducati 1199 Panigale ready for its World Superbike debut year.

After three years of constructive cooperation, the relationship between Ducati and Team Althea Racing will now come to an end. The cooperation from 2010 to 2012 reached major sporting achievements, including winning the 2011 Manufacturers' and Riders' Superbike World Championship in addition to the 2011 Manufacturers' and Riders' titles of the Superstock series.

Despite both parties' intention to continue the collaboration, an agreement, which meets the requirements of both Team Althea Racing and the Bologna-based manufacturer's management, has not been found for 2013. However, the exceptionally good relationship that Ducati has enjoyed with Team Althea Racing, combined with the friendship and gratitude towards team owner, Genesio Bevilacqua, for his continuing efforts and loyalty during these years, means that other forms of cooperation between Ducati and Team Althea could still be found in the future.

With Ducati's 2013 plans now almost finalised, more details will be released in the next few days.

Kawasaki Racing Team pairing Tom Sykes and Loris Baz concluded two days of testing at Valencia yesterday as part of the build up to the 2013 FIM Superbike World Championship season.

The Valencia circuit, tight and intense, with many corners squeezed into a small overall area, was dry for the team on the first day but rains at lunchtime on the second day brought the tests to a premature halt. Despite this, each rider still put in more than 130 laps so the sessions proved to be very worthwhile in a multitude of ways. The asphalt at Valencia has been resurfaced recently and was smoother than the last visit to the former SBK championship circuit.

As the venue is no longer used for SBK racing it was decided to not carry on testing in wet conditions, with action finishing at around 1pm, as the data gathered would have only very limited relevance. In dry conditions the team believe that the resurfaced track was around 0.5 seconds faster than before after consulting with other teams that were running Spanish championship machinery at the tests.

Tom and Loris consider that for a first shakedown of their new 2013 Ninja ZX-10R race machines the track offered a good opportunity to gain valuable track time, until the rains arrived.

Last year in testing Sykes put in a 1'33.1s lap time at Valencia, and this year, on day one and then again on worn tyres on day two, he set a 1'32.8s best. Baz set a strong 1'33.4s lap time, a good mark considering that fast outright lap times were not the aim of this test in particular. Both riders consider that if the rains had not appeared on the final afternoon then their lap times could have been in the region of 0.5 seconds faster.

The next test outing for the team will be at Motorland Aragon, in mid November, with three days of action scheduled.

The preparation for the 2013 FIM Superbike World Championship is in full swing. BMW Motorrad factory rider Marco Melandri (ITA) and his new team-mate Chaz Davies (GBR) conducted two days of winter testing in Jerez in the south of Spain. It was Chaz's first time working on track with BMW Motorrad. He used the two days to get acquainted with his new environment and with his RR. The test was also a good opportunity for the re-structured team to get to grips with each other.

Over the two days, BMW Motorrad evaluated newly developed components for the RR. Unfortunately, track time was reduced due to the changing weather conditions. Yesterday it was dry in the morning but raining in the afternoon. This morning it was still wet before the rain stopped around noon. The highest air and track temperatures reached was between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius. In total, Marco and Chaz completed 149 laps or 659 kilometres of testing on their RRs. Having raced there once back in 1990, Jerez will again feature on the Superbike World Championship calendar in 2013 when it will host the season finale in October.

Marco Melandri: 'Unfortunately we could not ride that much because of the weather. The track was never really dry or really wet, it was always in between so we could not do as many laps as we planned but had to wait in the garage for some time. We hope to have more luck and better weather at the next test. Anyway, it was nice to be at the race track, to meet up and work with the team again. It was also good to test with my new team-mate Chaz for the first time. It is interesting to know what he thinks about our RR. As a person, I think he is a good guy and I feel that we will get on very well.'

Chaz Davies: 'It was great to test my RR for the first time and to be back on the track again. Unfortunately we didn't have the weather we were hoping for; it would have been nice to have consistent conditions no matter if wet or dry but that wasn't the case so it was a little bit challenging. I think I need to start steadily; I wouldn't be on the pace after one test even in perfect conditions. We need to keep working and hopefully we will have better luck with the weather at the next test.

My first impression of the bike is very good. When I tried the bike for the first time, there were no surprises at all, which is always nice. The RR is very well balanced; it has a lot of power and a lot of options to control the power. So far, we have mostly worked on finding my riding position. The BMW Motorrad team is really great. I knew a few of the guys before but not too many of them so it was good to meet everybody. I have to learn a lot of new names with so many people in the garage but I am sure that I will get there soon. Everybody is so friendly and welcoming and obviously good at their job, so it is a pleasure to work with the team.'

Serafino Foti: 'We were not so lucky with this test; the weather did not help us at all. We had a lot of things to work on. Our riders did different jobs: Marco tried some new components to improve the bike, but unfortunately it was impossible to evaluate all available material. For Chaz it was the first test with the BMW family. He used it to become familiar with his RR and to find the right settings and riding position for the bike. We hope to have better conditions at the next tests, because it is very important to keep up with our work programme. Regardless, the test was good for consolidating the new team structure. All the guys have done a great job and there was a positive and confident atmosphere in our garage. We are very motivated to start the new season.'

003_max_biaggi_press_conference.jpg

Multiple world champion Max Biaggi announced his retirement from the sport today in a press conference at the Vallelunga circuit on the outskirts of Rome, where the 41-year-old first began his racing career.

After winning his second World Superbike crown one month ago at Magny-Cours (the sixth world title of his career), the press conference convened at the start of this week by the Italian rider was surrounded by considerable speculation about his future; whether he would retire, continue another year with Aprilia, move to Ducati in Superbike or even return to MotoGP, but in an emotional moment Biaggi announced he had decided to hang up his leathers and helmet for good following an illustrious and ultra-successful career.

"I really wanted this press conference because today is an important moment for Biaggi as a person; he abandons this world as world champion, a man of sport, to make way for a Biaggi that maybe very few people know really well" the Italian rider declared. "I chose Vallelunga because everything began here for me. It began by chance many years ago, a sort of magic world for a young guy who had absolutely nothing to do with the world of bikes, but then something sparked off in me and afterwards it became a dream that has taken me a very long way ".

"All of my life in the last twenty years has been part of a very contorted world, full of joy and difficult moments, ups and downs, but what made the real difference was the passion that has pushed me towards always giving my best and my all. This passion for racing has taken me onto some great achievements. I have had many companions along the way, but one that truly stands out is Aprilia, with whom together we have written some important chapters in racing history. It was true love! We got together, we left each other, we hitched up again... And for this reason it is right and I am happy that I am retiring as world champion with Aprilia".

"It wasn't an easy decision to make, and last night was the longest night of my life. For sure nothing will be the same as before but I am serene because it was a decision I wanted to make, not one I was forced into making. In any case together with Aprilia we are discussing about a project in the not too distant future and I hope I will be able to give you some more information soon".

Max Biaggi started his international career in 250 GP at the relatively late age of 20 in 1991, but by the end of the following year he had notched up his first race win at Kyalami in the same category. He continued to race in 250 GP until the end of 1997, taking four successive title wins, and was then in 500/MotoGP from 1998 until 2005, a category in which he won a total of 13 races without ever taking the overall championship victory. After a year away from the sport he switched to World Superbike, immediately winning his first race in Qatar in 2007. A further 20 victories, the last one of which at the Nurburgring this year, together with two world championship titles followed in a career that has seen the Italian cement his place as one of the legends of world motorcycle racing in the last two decades.

TEAM TOTH and PTR Honda will join forces in 2013 with experienced racer Imre Toth heading a two-man team in the World Supersport Championship. Imre, a former 125cc and 250cc GP racer, is going into his fourth year in World Supersport and scored his best result to date in 2012 when he took an impressive fourth place at Monza in difficult conditions.

The 27-year-old from Hungary has big ambitions for 2013 and believes the PTR Honda will help him become a regular points scorer and challenger in the top 10 of the series. He has prior experience of racing a PTR customer bike so is expected to get off to a quick start when testing starts in early 2013.

A second Toth PTR Honda rider will be announced shortly. The Toth PTR Honda team will operate out of the same garage as the PTR Honda team that has already announced Luca Marconi as its first rider.

Imre Toth: "I raced against the PTR Honda bikes in 2012 and it was clear they were very good in all situations, they were the class of the field. To be joining this team and using the best machinery in 2013 is a boost for me and I am excited about what results we can achieve together. I am focussed on being as fit and ready to race as possible, I have never been more motivated to race, this is a great opportunity."

Simon Buckmaster, Toth PTR Honda Team Manager: "This is a new collaboration for PTR and Toth, two established names in World Supersport. Together we will be strong and competitive. Having worked with Toth as a PTR customer team before, this is a positive step forward and we are delighted to welcome Imre into the core of our team. He improved throughout through 2012 and together we want to maximise that and turn it into consistent good results in 2013. His Toth PTR Honda team mate will be announced soon."
