Australian teenage racing sensation Matt Davies will race for PTR in the 2013 World Supersport Championship. After blazing a trail of glory through firstly off-road racing in Australia before moving to England to race in the Superteen and British 125cc Championships with much success, Davies won the first European Junior Cup Championship in 2011 and cut his teeth in the European Superstock 600 in 2012. Matt will join the team testing at Jerez in Spain on 22nd January, his 17th birthday.

Davies said: "I am very excited about joining PTR for my first season in World Supersport. As a rookie I could not have asked for a better team to help with my development. I will have a lot to learn but I know I will have the right people around me to help me achieve the best results. I will get my first ride on the PTR Honda on my 17th birthday and I cannot wait."

Simon Buckmaster, PTR Honda Team Manager, added: "Matt is only 17 in January and has already shown great potential. PTR has in most cases worked with young riders and when the chance came around to work with Matt we were excited about what we could achieve together in the coming seasons to see Matt grow as a rider. There is no pressure on him in 2013; we just want to work with him to achieve the best we can as he steps up to a full World Championship. After that I am sure we will see Matt challenging for the Supersport title and then on into WSB or MotoGP. He has ridden in the UK as well, so support for him from Australia and the UK will be a great boost."

The history of Francis Batta and his Alstare organisation is a thread that has been interwoven through the fabric of the Superbike World Championship series for most of its long life, but last year the Alstare squad was missing from the entry list - and missed by all. Now back with their old original partners in Ducati, Alstare is the team that has taken over the role as lead Ducati squad in a whole new era of SBK racing, with the Panigale 1199 being developed into a full spec SBK machine as we speak.

WorldSBK.com spoke to Batta at the final test of the 2012 season, to find out more about the return of a team that has produced champions and wins with regularity for over 20 years. When asked about what his return to top level SBK racing meant to him, Batta stated, "I feel that my life is the motorcycle and for six months at home with nothing happening... this was for me very difficult, psychologically."

Batta explained how the new co-operation with the Ducati factory in Bologna will work in 2013. "The machines and so on will be in our workshops in Belgium. The job is very similar to the one we did before for Suzuki. The development will be in Ducati but the team will be located in Belgium. After the races the bikes and so on will go back to Belgium. We have eight people working all day in Alstare in the workshops. We still have the dynos, flow bench, etc. all working at a high level."

Batta began his WSS and SBK involvement working alongside Ducati, and it is appropriate in many ways that he makes his return to the SBK paddock with his team running big red vee-twins.

Team manager Andrea Grillini presented his 2013 World Superbike plans at the Bologna Motor Show yesterday. The Italian squad, which is based nearby, confirmed that it will continue in next year's production-based championship and announced the signing of new rider, Italian Vittorio Iannuzzo who will race with an updated version of the BMW S1000 RR.

Grillini, who had a difficult first year in Superbike, declared: "Our sponsors have all confirmed their support for the team for next year in what is not an easy moment for Italian companies, and this will allow us to take part in the world championship once again. I am delighted to participate in World Superbike with a young but experienced Italian rider. Our aim is to get into the points at every round and I'm sure we can do well given the potential of the team and the rider."

30-year-old Iannuzzo from Avellino, who has taken part in 91 SBK races with a best result of 7th back in 2003, said he was delighted to return to World Superbike. "It's going to be a tough season because World Superbike, together with MotoGP, is at the very top in bike racing. For us any position that will give us points in the standings will be a great result. I'm sure we can do a good job and I'd like to thank Andrea Grillini, my manager Ciro Troncone and our sponsors who have supported us in the last few years and who continue to do so".

The newly created Mahi Racing Team, an officially supported team for Kawasaki in the 2013 FIM Supersport World Championship, underwent its first successful test sessions in Iberia recently. After a high profile unveiling of the team in its true spiritual home of India, the European-based arm of the team travelled to first Jerez in Spain and then Portimao in Portugal to undergo initial track tests as a complete group.

Kenan Sofuoglu and Fabien Foret joined with their British-based technical crew at Jerez for two days last week. This gave Kenan the chance to get used to the K-Tech suspension units the team will use in 2013, and gave both riders the opportunity to work closely with their crew chiefs, Nico Sartori for Kenan and Andrew Stone for Fabien.

After some early teething issues, the first days in Spain provided both some progress and some issues to overcome. On day two Fabien fell and hurt his hand, but he continued on as the team headed to Portugal for another two day test. This relocation to Portimao allowed Both Fabien and Kenan to find much more positive results, even when the second day of the test was largely lost to rain.

Kenan Sofuoglu: "The team had to work hard to be ready for the test and in the first test so there were a lot of things still to do, so I spent my time trying to get the feeling to the K-Tech suspension in Spain. We also wanted to test to meet each other and get some track time together before the end of the year. It was very useful in Spain to meet with the new mechanics and so on, and then when we went to Portimao the bike was working a lot better. The biggest thing about these tests is that we have found out what we need for the next time, when we test in January. I am sure we will be fully ready them."

Fabien Foret: "The Jerez tests did not start so well for me but things got better on the second day with bike set-up even though I crashed. Things were a lot better when we got to Portimao even if my fall at Jerez still had an effect on me. I lost a bit of time because of that but I also did some laps in wet conditions on day two, which went well."

Andrew Stone, Team Technical Director: "Mahi Racing are happy with our first tests and we will be making improvements along the way. In general our team has bonded very quickly and the signs are good for 2013."

With a strong and evenly balanced entry in the FIM Supersport World Championship in 2012, and riders from four manufacturers scoring podium places, the class passed by a few landmarks and saw new totals reached over the past few months.

Kenan Sofuoglu (Kawasaki Lorenzini) not only won a record third world title for himself but he also expanded the record total of wins that he already held for this class of racing from 17 to the new all time best of 21.

He is followed most closely in the total of wins by his new 2013 Kawasaki team-mate, Fabien Foret who now has 15 career victories. Fabien scored two of those in 2012, as the 2002 WSS champion ran out fourth overall in the points table.

The younger or simply less experienced WSS riders also made big marks on the score sheets in 2012, as rookie rider Jules Cluzel (PTR Honda) underwent an almost seamless transition from Moto2 to WSS. He pushed all-time great Sofuoglu hardest in the latter stages and won four races, a total only equalled by Sofuoglu in 2012. A great debut season as he finished second overall, only 21 points from Sofuoglu. He is now ranked inside the top 20 of WSS race winners overall.

Sam Lowes (Bogdanka PTR Honda) made the transition from rookie to race winner in 2012, taking victories at Donington and Aragon and finishing third in the points. Former SBK factory rider Lorenzo Lanzi even added his name to the list of WSS winners, in a one off ride for the Czech PRORACE Honda team at a sodden Assen in round three.

In the Manufacturers' Championship, Honda won by 14 points over Kawasaki, but other manufacturers with regular riders on their machines, Yamaha and Triumph, secured podium finishes in 2012.

Triumph secured a Misano podium with the Power Team by Suriano Daytona 675 of Alex Baldolini. He finished seventh overall, a great effort from rider, team and manufacturer in what was not an official Triumph outfit.

Russian rider Vladimir Leonov (Yakhnich Racing Yamaha) put in not one but two podiums on his Yamaha R6 in 2012, included a very popular one at his home circuit of Moscow Raceway.

The race winning rider career totals, as they stood after the final 2012 season round at Magny-Cours, follow on below:

21 K. Sofuoglu
15 F. Foret
13 S. Charpentier
12 E. Laverty
11 P. Casoli
11 K. Muggeridge
8 S. Chambon
7 A. Pitt
6 F.

New Aprilia Racing factory rider Sylvain Guintoli is now looking at the next stage of his push to become a championship contender, after his decision to hold out for the seat vacated by retiring World Champion Max Biaggi proved to be a good one.

As a privateer Ducati vee-twin rider in 2012 he won three races, a remarkable feat, and one that surely must take at least some pressure off him as he approaches his first full season as an Aprilia factory rider? Yes and no, according to Sylvain himself. "There is still a difference between riding as a privateer or as a factory rider," he stated. "The aim is to go and fight for the championship. There is a lot of work to do and there is another big step to do, but to make that step you need the right bike and the right team. The bike and team I am going to be working with next year is definitely going to be the right one. I have full faith on them giving me everything I need to be in the front. That is what matters to me. That is what I want; I am ready for it. All I want is to challenge and I want to get on track knowing that I am fighting for the wins."

He has already won something, however, the gamble with himself that he should hold out for the ride he really wanted. "It is really exciting and it was a bit of gamble but it was definitely 100% the right thing to do," said Sylvain.

As for his team, the actual crew he will work with in 2013, Guintoli is happy for others to make those decisions, rather than demand a particular crew chief of his own. "I trusted 100% what Luigi Dall'Igna is choosing to do because he knows what riders need and he knows what is going on. This crew I am working with now, the crew that Max had last year knows the bike very well and knows how to work it. They have the right reflexes already. You can tell because they do not even need to speak to each other when there is something to do on the bike, they just know. This is part of winning. I am giving Aprilia 100% trust and 100% regarding this because they know better than I do. I know what to do on track and they know how to make me do it right."

After a remarkable 2012 season in which BMW Motorrad Motorsport rider Marco Melandri won not only the first SBK races for the BMW S1000RR but went on to be a championship challenger, Melandri remains the spearhead of BMW's new-look effort in 2013.

With the team he rides for now - BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK - run out of Marco's native Italy and not Germany like before, but with full factory development support for engines and electronics still in place, Melandri remains in an enviable position compared to most as the 2013 season draws near.

Although there appears to be work still to do in finding weekend-on-weekend consistency of machine performance from the highly-oversquare if ‘conventional' four-cylinder BMW machine, Melandri made progress on the new-for-2013 17-inch tyres at a recent Jerez test.

When asked by WorldSBK.com if the outside view of the official BMW bike - that when works well it works very well, but that it maybe has a smaller window of perfection than some other machines - Melandri said, "I think our bike is a very good bike but, like you say, the window to make it work and give you good confidence is very small. When you are inside this window you can be fast and it looks easy. When something is not perfect and you go out of this window you fight with the bike sometimes. I think this is the main place where we have to work, to make the bike easier. We knew this before the season, we know now. The first year was to try to understand what we have to do more on the bike. So for the first year, for sure we did more than was expected last season."

Melandri's indication that he and his team possibly over-performed in 2012, right up to what was a final ranking of third, with six individual race wins along the way, showed just how much progress was made last year. Not being champions after entering 2012 a season with no prior race wins for the S1000RR does not point to a lack of ambition or improvement in the entire project.

The secret of success in 2013 for Melandri and BMW's new-look official team? "I think everything is a package. Rider, team, bike, factory - all together," said Marco. "For sure the rider may be on top and he must try to stimulate and push the team and give the right information. Then the team has to push the factory and the factory has to understand the information an what to do with the bike. I think it is always teamwork. Alone, the rider or team or factory cannot do this."

The Rivamoto team from Russia is making a number of important changes in preparation for its third season in World Supersport. The first change concerns the technical equipment of the team with a switch from Yamaha to Honda. This choice is determined by the potential of the Honda, which Rivamoto maintain will allow both riders to fight for a higher position in the championship.

The second step was the signing of a contract with Irishman Jack Kennedy, who last season finished runner-up in the British Supersport Championship. Eduard Blokhin and Jack Kennedy have already taken part in the first session of pre-season tests, which are judged to have been a success.

Eduard Blokhin, founder and rider of the team: "After five years on a Yamaha, the decision to change the bike was not easy for us. But already during the tests in Jerez and Aragon, I realized that it was the correct one. For the past two seasons, I have had the opportunity to know all the traits of the bike and get some experience, so now I feel the potential for progress."

Jack Kennedy: "I am delighted to have signed a contract with Rivamoto. This is a fantastic opportunity to participate in the World Championship. I will try to do everything to make sure the team believes in me, and to achieve the best results. Of course, I have no illusions, I'm a rookie in this series, and I still have much to learn. But tests in Jerez showed that I had a good feeling with the bike. So now I'm looking forward to the season."

Jeremy McWilliams, team manager: "We are pleased to have been joined by Jack. Watching his career, I can say that it's a perfect time to come to try his hand at a global level. We made a decision to speak to Honda about changing for 2013, and looking at the progress of Jack on the new bike during the tests, we are confident in the prospects for next season. He has literally exceeded himself on a new track, and now we are planning to return to Jerez in January, before the official tests start at Phillip Island."
