0245_2011_fim_ceremony.jpgIn the glitzy surroundings of the Estoril Casino FIM champions of all kinds were presented with their winners' medals and certificates on Sunday 4 December, with Supersport World Champion Chaz Davies and Superbike World Champion Carlos Checa in the vanguard (Photos: FIM/Good Shoot).

Around five hundred guests packed into the impressive Silver and Black room of the Estoril Casino to enjoy an evening of entertainment, which was broadcast live on TV in several different countries.

Alongside some iconic names from many disciplines four times WSBK champion Carl Fogarty was formally recognized as an FIM Legend, as well as handing out prizes to other winning competitors.

In addition to the many FIM World Champions who stepped forward to receive their awards, the FIM also made three special presentations for FIM Rookie of the Year, FIM Woman of the Year and FIM Personality of the Year. These three awards were voted for by the media, fans, teams, industry and riders via the FIM-LIVE.com website during more recent weeks, with over twelve thousand votes being received in total.

There was a pleasant surprise in store for Carlos Checa who was voted FIM Personality of the Year, topping off what has been an incredible season for the Spanish rider.

Overall host of the event, FIM President Vito Ippolito stated. "Last year was the first year for the FIM Gala, and whilst it was a great success, the second edition has been even better. It is such a pleasure and honour to have so many FIM World Champions and our extended FIM family all together to share this wonderful evening. Again I must thank the riders and teams for being here tonight, as after their busy schedules I know they will be ready for the winter break. However I think even only its second year, we can all understand the importance of the FIM Gala both for the FIM and for motorcycle sport as a whole."

His fine sense of good stories was appreciated by many readers and colleagues, and in the last few years, he reported on all the top motorcycle championships - MotoGP, SBK and Motocross - and had been an esteemed permanent media representative in World Superbike for many a season.

Current Motorrad Chief Editor Michael Pfeiffer said: "I am personally extremely saddened by Michael's passing away, he was not only a perfect journalist, he was a friend after more than 20 years of working together..." and Pfeiffer's declaration is shared by the Infront Motor Sports press office.

Michael Rohrer was 52 years old. He is survived by his wife Christina and a ten-year-old son Daniel, to whom Infront Motor Sports wishes to pass on its sincerest condolences.

127_r12_lombardi_action.jpgAn agreement has been signed between Martini Corse and the Italian company Pata that will see the Pata by Martini team take part in the 2012 Supersport World Championship. After its title win in CIV Italian Superstock 600, the team headed by Claudio Quintarelli has now reached a partnership agreement with Pata, which becomes title sponsor from the opening World Supersport round at Phillip Island, Australia.

The Pata by Martini team will take part in World Supersport with CIV champion Dino Lombardi, who also won the European Superstock 600 round at Brno, while the reconfirmed Francesco Cocco and new signing Luca Salvadori will take part in Superstock 600, both Italian and European.

"Pata's entry as title sponsor of our team is great satisfaction for us, both on a human and professional level," commented Quintarelli. "I am delighted that a brand such as Pata, which is already involved in World Supersbike, has decided to consolidate its partnership with our team. With this level of support, we can expect to be protagonists in 2012."

The Pata by Martini team has already taken part in several test sessions in view of the 2012 world championship, the latest of which was a couple of weeks ago at Vallelunga.

glenn_irwin.jpgNorthern Ireland's rising talent Glenn Irwin (photo) will join German 125cc ace Marvin Fritz in the Racedays Kawasaki squad for the team's 2012 European Superstock 600 campaign. Revolution Racedays finished a close second in the 2011 championship with American rider Joshua Day, and with this new line-up will be aiming to secure Kawasaki's first title in this class.

Glenn Irwin, 18 years of age from Carrickfergus near Belfast, comes from a fantastic season in British Superstock and was particularly impressive as a wild card at the Portimao round. ''I am delighted to be part of the Racedays Kawasaki squad for 2012," he said. "I've worked with the team on a couple of occasions and I know they can provide me with the required elements to be a race winner. Staying with Kawasaki is also a key factor, as they have supported me in 2011 and I'd like to repay them with a European championship. Roll on 2012!''

Marvin Fritz tested recently with Racedays at Jerez and consistently set very competitive times, despite it being only his second time on a 600cc machine. He has multiple podiums in the IDM championship. ''After some years competing in IDM 125 I'm now looking forward to riding in the European Superstock 600 championship with Racedays. At the test at Jerez in November I rode the Kawasaki for the first time and it all went very well. I had a very good feeling with the team and from the first lap I had an amazing feeling with this bike. The lap times were also pretty good! I can't wait to start the season 2012 and with a team like this, with their experience, it's very much possible to succeed.''

Simon Crafar, Team Coach, added: "Working with young riders, for me is the best job in the world and I thoroughly enjoyed working with Josh Day in 2011. Glenn & Marvin are already fast, but are younger and less experienced and I am hoping to be able to help them even more than I could with Josh. The Racedays team atmosphere is very good and we will do our best to give the riders what they need to do the job.''

bwg_bergman_vallelunga_3.jpgThe BWG Racing Kawasaki team is limbering up for its second season in the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup with some good results. The Rome-based squad, under the guidance of team manager Marco Lobello, recently took part in a Winter Trophy event at the Vallelunga circuits on the outskirts of the capital, taking the win in the Open category thanks to a great performance by its leading rider Christoffer "Chris" Bergman.

Bergman, 22 years of age from Säffle (Sweden), 2010 Swedish Pro Superbike champion, will defend the colours of the Italian team in the 2012 FIM Cup after competing in a trio of events with them at the Nürburgring, Magny-Cours and Portimão this last season. His best result was a 14th place at the Algarve circuit. The team's plans include an eventual second rider alongside Bergman, with the aim of getting the most out of their campaign in this category.

"Now we must concentrate on 2012," admitted Lobello. "We'll have our first tests at the end of February and then some others in March. We'll prepare the new bikes with the support of Kawasaki Europe and Kawasaki Italia, and will be searching for another rider to line up alongside Chris".

jd_imola_pr_2.jpgYoung American Joshua Day will step up from European Superstock 600 to the FIM Supersport World Championship in 2012. In his first season in STK600 Day showed an ability to learn new tracks and took his Kawasaki Ninja ZX 6R to multiple podiums, pole positions and two race wins in one of the most competitive race series in the world. Day finished the season a close overall second in the championship

For 2012 Josh will remain with Kawasaki and step up into the FIM World Supersport Championship, racing for the Italian 'Go Eleven' team. Team owner Gianni Ramello is passionate about motorcycle racing and helping young riders develop their careers, and the team is confident that with Joshua Day they will be competitive right from the start of the season.

Joshua Day: "I'm really glad to have been given this opportunity after such a great year with Kawasaki in STK 600 and I'm going to do my best to give Go Eleven the results they deserve. I have to thank Gianni Ramello of Team Go Eleven for putting his faith in me and also Kawasaki, Leo Vince, Gina Nadeau from Competition Sports, and Gerry Bryce from Racedays for working so hard to put this package together. I know most of the circuits now, and I know I can be fast on the Kawasaki so we'll be going for the win from day one."

Gianni Ramello added: "When I first saw Josh in Stock 600 I had a dream to have him in my team. Now the dream has become reality! I think that Josh has really great qualities and that together we can do great things. The team is very excited about this and we cannot wait to start working. I believe in young people and the philosophy of my team is to give them the opportunity to advance. And so I wanted Josh to join us and I will also continue with the talented Christian Gamarino in STK 600. Thanks to Kawasaki and to all those who are so enthusiastic to take part in this project - the mechanics, and our great team manager Denis Sacchetti. I'm sure that Josh is really the right man for this team and I feel that we can take away great satisfaction."

martin-jessopp-signs-for-ptr-311x330.jpgExperienced British Championship rider Martin Jessop (26) will compete in the WSS championship in 2012, as part of a multi-rider PTR Honda team. Martin is a proven front-runner in the British Superbike Championship with a fourth place finish to his credit while riding for Riders Ducati. He has British Supersport experience and recently finished second at the Macau GP in 2011. Motorcycle retail chain Riders will continue to back Martin in 2012 as it joins forces with front running British based team PTR Honda - the organisation behind the successful Parkalgar Honda and Bogdanka Honda race teams (runner-up in the World Championship in 2009 and 2010).

Martin will get his first outing on his PTR Honda early in the New Year at a private test in Europe before a further test at Philip Island in Australia ahead of the opening round of the 2012 Championship at the same circuit on 26th February

The rider from Yeovil, Somerset, in the south west of England, who also had a wild card entry at Magny-Cours this year on a Honda Supersport, said, "I am over the moon to have 2012 all sorted. I said at the end of the 2011 season my objective was to get into the World Championship and Supersport was my best opportunity. I sat down with my team and Riders and we wanted a squad at the sharp end of the Championship so I would know I had a good bike and proven package. The British based PTR team was my number one choice and to get a ride with them was brilliant - it's not often that a racer gets his first choice so I can honestly say I could not be happier."

pj-jacobsen-njmp-satrace1-003-850.jpgAnother strong young American talent, Patrick 'PJ' Jacobsen, will race in the 2012 World Supersport Championship after agreeing terms with the front-running PTR Honda team. At just 18-years of age PJ has a wealth of experience racing in Europe, and will get his first outing on his PTR Honda early in the New Year at a private test in Europe before a further test at Philip Island in Australia ahead of the opening round of the 2012 Championship at the same circuit on 26th February.

He is the second new talent to join the PTR team in a short space of time, after British rider Martin Jessop was also confirmed as a PTR Honda rider very recently.

Said Jacobsen of his new opportunity, "I'm very excited about returning to Europe to race in the World Super Sport class with my new team PTR Honda. I have always loved riding Hondas, and the 600 in particular is a fantastic bike. I know the reputation of PTR and Parkalgar, and I am proud to have the opportunity to ride with such an excellent team on such an incredible bike. I feel that the timing of this move is perfect. My experience and training so far have opened up this path for me to follow. But also, I know that in many ways I'll be starting from the beginning again.

There will be new people, new tracks, and new styles. There will be a lot to learn, but I intend to be competitive straightaway. I'll need to work very hard to achieve success for myself and for my team but I know that I will have the complete support of Simon and the entire team. Thanks to everyone on both sides of the Atlantic who made this deal happen. I can't wait to head over to the UK to begin!"
